Susan Sarandon Bio

It was 1968. Democratic Convention and there was a casting call for a film with a variety of roles for young people who interrupted it. Joe (1970) was auditioned in New York by two recent Catholic University graduates. Chris Sarandon, an actor who had studied in acting, was not selected. His wife Susan was offered a part as Susan Compton. She plays the daughter of Bill Compton (Dennis Patrick). In the film Dad Bill kills Susan's drug dealer boyfriend and next befriends Joe (Peter Boyle)who is a bigot who works as an assembly line worker and who is a collector of guns.Five years later, Sarandon made the film which cult classic fans have come to recognize her as Janet who becomes involved with transvestite Dr. Frank n Furter in The The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). After more than 15 years of beginning her career Sarandon at last actively campaigned for a starring role in the film Annie in Bull Durham (1988), travelling on her own expense from Rome from Rome to Los Angeles. "It was a fantastic script ... and it shattered numerous myths and challenged the American definition of success" said Sarandon. "I attended the film studio along with Kevin Costner and shook hands with his gorgeous assistants before boarding the plane. Tim Robbins, her Bull Durham (1988), supporting actor was her first lover. He had two sons in 1992. This puts Sarandon in a difficult position. She was forced to leave her home to perform characters that were extremely difficult. This led to four Academy Award nominations in the 1990s, and the best actress award for Dead Man Walking (1995). Her first Academy Award nomination was for Louis Malle's Atlantic City (1980).
